or maybe it is both …..
This is a swap meet story and a truck in the making. We were at the swap meet in Conroe and were all just cruising around on the golf cart. Brody, our oldest grandson was with us and he was definitely in his element with his Paw looking at all the “cool” stuff. I had been hanging out at a booth and they pull up and said come take a ride with us. I am all for that, so off we went. I think my Uncle Louis was riding with us and my cousin BJ (who you will hear a lot about in my stories) was there too. Jimmy one of our trader friends was around too. Anyway, you get the gist – the whole gang was there.
As we round one of the corners we see this “truck” and I am telling you it had “everything on it” but the kitchen sink. It was HILARIOUS. The guy that owned it had it hooked up to a old hippie van and he was selling out. It had an arm that waved at you, a whiskey bottle something in the engine, a surf board with a leg sticking out and the list goes on and on.

I remember, plain as day, us all looking at it and thinking of all the “stuff” and “time” that went into this truck. Then i remember hearing my husband tell the owner (or somebody), if he will take XXX amount of dollars for this truck I am buying it. I know my mouth must have fell open like a broke mail box. I am like, I know I did not hear him say that. But for all of you that know my husband, he sees vision in things that others don’t. He was “dead” serious i found out in just a short amount of time.
He looked over at BJ and said – how much money you got? They put there money together and here we go……And before I knew it, the guy was smiling and unhooking the truck from his hippie van and we were going to get our truck to pull home our “new” truck. I have to say……I was not sure where this one was going – but i knew and adventure was in the making.
Well, the trip home was nothing short of a “hoot”. We had cars coming up beside us and honking and waving. You would have though we were celebrities or just darn crazy. There were times I wondered if we had “lost anything” and in some ways hoping we had Then about 10 miles from home we heard what sounded like and explosion. We looked back and all you could see was rubber and “stuff” flying. We had just had a blow out on this jewel and we were pulling over in the liquor store parking lot. Poor Brody, I know he thought we were crazy but i tell you what he was having a blast. At this point we ranked up there with the coolest grandparents ever, and we had cool friends and toys too. Jimmy helped us find a spare tire and eventually we were back on the road with our treasure. We were headed on home to Crockett.
Once we were home, we had time to survey our swap meet purchase. Yes it had a few things that needed to be tweaked, but RK was right on it. It was going to be a cool little adventure and the RAT FINK was born.
We had a fun time fixing it up and decorating it. We had a good friend Terry H. paint cool pictures on the doors and we took off a few things and added a few things to make it ours. One of the additions was the “cheese still” and of course there were a few rats added.
The doors turned out awesome and we even have our own “Rat Fink” logo.
We have been to Rally’s and Parades and were the hit for sure. When you go to Sonic the folks (young and old) love it.
One of the most memorable adventures was to Crusing the Coast 2019. We took the Truck and it was a big hit, so big that it was on TV one of the nights we were at the block party. Of course, that is the 3rd year in a row that RK and his creations have been on TV. Check out my blog post about “my husband is famous” and you will see what I mean.
Just a fair warning though…..do not stand behind the truck and look up at the big old rat….you may just get a surprise and get a little damp…….I will leave that one there.
We have got little critters that will run out from under the truck and make the crowds squeal. We have a little rat on the hood that has been many a mile through rain and sunshine and he is still there. We have a little rat on the dash that disappeared once but showed back up under the seat.
We love our crazy Rat Fink and i really love my husands visions; even if it takes me time to see them sometimes.
Enjoy the ride and laugh a lot, life is to short to be a “rat” at the party.
